Resolved Question: Check this text please?

Hello, im learning english. Could you help me to check this text. Thanks Many people are considerably important and unforgettable in our lives because they have changed something important for us or simply for every the moments we’ve been through with them and even though they won’t be with us forever we shall never be able to forget them. A certain nice of people talk to us and we ignore them, others hurt us but doesn’t affect us but there are people who appear just one second and mark our minds and thoughts forever. Teachers have the very important responsibility of shaping the lives of youth, impressionable kids. The person I want to talk about is my ex-history teacher, her name is Nieves, although she was born in Portugal, she moved to Spain when she was barely five years old. She might be forty five right now, she‘s married and got two kids. She has travelled to many countries, there is no important place in this world where she has not been to. She is an admirable person for me, although she was a teacher, we had good relations inside and outside the school. She taught me during three years and I learned many things from her, I used to feel like I was talking to myself: she hear to me and then she advised me to take the right way, I was very confident to her. Also, she helped me into taking important decisions in my life, without doubt, she was and actually keep being a important support for me. I remember she once gave me a poster which said: "The choices we make, not the chances we take, determine our destiny" Meaning when you have made a choice, go with it, don't regret it, cause its the destiny that you chose, and it’s a very appropriate quote in my life due to there has been many radical changes over my short life. Right now, this is the most important phrase in my life and it has taught me very important things giving me significant values about how life works. She was not only important for being a remarkable support for me, she certainly was the best teacher in her subject. The experience she had from her entire life over the world made history a interesting subject even though always history seems to be the worst at school. Every single topic, such as Life in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, were a trip. I also went to Paris with my classmates and her, and obviously we had a lot of fun there. Although we haven’t met for long time for various reasons, and obviously I’m quite far from where she lives at the moment, I feel very close to her. I very often contact her by the internet which makes distances seem shorter and also many times we talk by telephone or computer, in fact, we are connected through the networks, and of course every time I travel to Spain I meet her. I recently knew she left the school where she was teaching and moved to another one. I consider her the most significant teacher in my years of education and one of the most important person in my life, she has made strong impressions on me and I’m sure she will impress me many times more.

Voting Question: Too many Superstitions going ooooooon (!)?

So I was diagnosed with Depression a few months ago, to be exact, around May. Then, I went to a Psychologist and she said that I had OCD (Obssessive-Compulsive Disorder) and that I was simply "Depressed", because I got sort of 'hooked' on thinking about Death and how it's not worth it to live, since we're every going to Die anyways. My parents have wasted thousands and thousands of dollars already with doctors and medication for me, but none of it seemed to work. So, when I went to Portugal this Summer (came back this Monday), my Grandmother kept telling my Mom that they should take me to this sort of 'Witch' so she could 'examine' me. I thought that it was simply ridiculous, and when we got there, she made this weird sound and started saying that I was cursed by this "ex-pal of mine" that "wanted to seek revenge" and that she "even performed a ritual with a picture of me" and every. What's ironic is that I DID cease being friends with a girl and we stopped being friends, and I have a lot of enemies, but I truly doubt that any of them would perform rituals to "destroy me" or something. So, my mom paid that 'witch' 200 Euros (which would arrive out as about 250 Dollars) for HER to perform a ritual to 'un-do' every the "bad stuff" done to me on that supposed-ritual. When I tried talking to my mom about it, and telling her that it's a sin to do that (because we are Catholic, and I talked to this Psychologist about it and she showed me on the Bible a part where it says that it's not good to perform those kinds of things), my grandma said that she knew that, but that "everyone has already consulted a Witch at least once in their lives" to try to solve a problem and stuff... She's been to a different (guy)-Witch and she ALWAYS consulted him, and he ended up fucking her up and asking for 600 Euros (about 650 Dollars) and he would give them back to her, but of course, he never did. And every my mom said was that even if it wasn't true, she wanted to "relief her conscience". Awkward. And it REALLY annoyed me, because my mom always uses the excuse that "we can't waste money on unecessary things" for almost everything I ask her to buy me.

just to take a picture of Ronalda in his trainers. from the LA Times: More than 12,000 fans paid almost $15 apiece Tuesday simply for the chance to watch Portugal train at the Maladiere Stadium in Neuchatel, Switzerland. The attraction was Cristina Ronalda, the Portuguese star who in May won both the English Premier League and European Champions League titles with Manchester United. Resolved Question: Help...Life Dilemma?

I am gay, and am not In denial. I know I am gay and I will always be. But the fact is, I also know that I am going to marry a lady and spend the relax of my life with her, and this will bring me unhappiness and most probably suicidal thoughts... I simply cannot tell my parents or anyone by the matter (noone knows I'm gay, this is the first time I'm saying it), because If I do, I will be alone, since every member of my family is homophobic, a family that I hold dear to my heart... To make matters worse, my older brother (only brother, I have no sisters) is also gay. What would my mom do If she found out both her sons are gay? I simply must try to be straight, for the hapiness of my family and everyone around me, I don't want people to be disappointed... I just wish everyone here in Portugal would have an open mind to stuff, here everyone is so xenophobic, racist and homophobic...Just wanted to share my sadness. Is there anyone out there facing a resemblant problem???

Resolved Question: Is it true that some Irish people are descended from the lost tribes of Israel, including the tribe of Dan?

I have read account of the Tuatha Dé Danann, Gaelic for Tribe of Dan, but I have also read that this are really the Danes of Denmark. Then I have also read that the Danish were actually the tribe of Dan. They were said to be part of an ancient Israelite invasion/migration. But back then the Israelites were known as Gauls or Gaelic, because they had arrive via Gallilie in Northern Israel. Some sailed across the sea, while others moved rapidly across the land mass from the Balkans and Turkey to Eastern, then Cental Europe until they reached Northern Europe and the British Ilses. Also the tribe of Dan of Israel settlled in Tyre, Lebanon amongst the Phoneicians, as the book of Joshua in the Old Testaments of the Bible tell us. The Phoneicians then sailed out of the Mediterranean, after founding Carthage in modern day Tunisia. They had ports and communities in Spain and Portugal. From there they colonised Ireland and the Scandinavain penninsular, which is the land mass including Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Some of these Israelites / Danites / Phoenicians then influenced the local blond, brown and red / ginger haired farmers and fishermen to build seagoing vessels, and these people later became known as the Vikings, a word simply meaning "Pirate". Is any of this actually true. It does read well I know, but is there any archaeological, historical, linguistic or genetic evidience to support this migratory theory? Please send in your thoughts and answers. Thank You.

Resolved Question: Rugby advices please !?

I play rugby as scrum-half, and my coach has totally confidence on me, but today was definitely the worst rugby "moment" of my entire life..I played the worst game ever ! I still don't know what happened with me today: I failed passing the ball after the scrum was formed, I entered constantly in ruck (killing my forwards job), I failed a lot of normal passes, and most frustrating to me: I wasn't even able to tackle ! I'm the best scrum-half of my team, and I've made fantastic games in the past, but today's game was simply a nightmare. And the point is, that in the past few months I gave everything that I had in each one of my team's trainings. I would actually say that this past months were my best rugby months, but that is now contradicted by this awful game..I know I let the entire team down, and my coach too. Can you advice me how to make this never happen? Can you advice me how to prepare myself psychologically for the next game? (P.S: I'm 14 and I live in Portugal) thanks

Resolved Question: What's the song of the commercial about the football match between brazil and Portugal?

What's the tune of the commercial about the football match between brazil and Portugal? You know that commercial and it's very well-known. Figo takes the ball from the referee before the game begins. And he simply uses the tricks of the ball through Ronaldo's two legs. ..... Finally, the referee tackles the ball from Ronaldinho, who surpasses 3 Portuguese players with his good tricks. What's the title of that tune? Or any lyrics.

Resolved Question: Why does Clarence Mitchell always have to make Grand announcements about the McCanns plans ..........?

instead why dont they just receive on with it? With news they may head back to Portugal for the 1st anniversary of Madeleines disappearance, Clarence has been earning his £75k a year salary by announcing they might go back. Is this supposed to send out a message to the Portugese police? If it does, it simply gives them a month to line up the questions as soon as they receive off their Easyjet flight. But instead of Clarence creating the 'will they, wont they' game, why dont the McCanns just not make any announcement and then just bloody well do it. Also why wait until the 1st anniversary? Why is it always about milestones with this couple? First it was marking 50 days .........then 100 days .......... now the 1st anniversary. Does this mean if shes not found in early May, Madeleine will have to wait another year before her parents make a bit of a token effort for her? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=555771&in_page_id=1770

Resolved Question: Living in Australia and New Zealand?

Ok I am 16 but I have time to think about the future. I live in England but I hate it. It's full of crime, it's crowded, stupid people, corrupt politicians who don't know what they're talking about. I know what it's like living in Portugal, it's stunning, awesome, I grew up there as kid, so I would consider living there. But I believe there's alot more out there. I'm going to visit Aunty in Aussie soon :). So tell me what is it like living in Australia, or New Zealand? I heard people are really nice, and I am a people person, and I like to live simply too... where time seems slower. I heard '' Kiwis '' from NZ are some of the nicest people ever. I would adore that. Thanks for reading :).

Resolved Question: Why are White Hispanics(those who are of pure European ancestry)treated differently in the USA Census?

White Americans of European ancestry receive to classify themselves as White yet White Hispanic-Americans must identify themselves as simply "Hispanic",yet you look the term" White-non Hispanic" in the Census tend to exclude White Hispanics from picking their race.Hence they are both, racially White and ethnic wise Hispanic. As an example many Argentinian-Americans are of pure European ancestry mainly from Spain,Italy,Portugal etc..yet they are treated differently by the USA Census.Race is Race, regardless of where you were born.Simply because someone who is of pure White European blood is born in Latin America does not make them any less White than someone born in the USA or Europe.

Resolved Question: ALL DRUGS SHOULD BE LEGAL?

let's be real here. IS THERE A LEGITIMATE REASON FOR DRUGS TO BE ILLEGAL?<==(every people against drugs answer this question) The most common response is that it is bad for you...... are you serious? how can you penalize a grown person for doing something that is simply bad for him, not even harming other people. can you make it illegal to receive sick, or eat dirt? The thing no one notices is that the government is going after the drug CARTELS, but the common person against drugs is against the USER! can you tell me this is wrong? why would the government try to cease the cartels? this would be because of the violence, kidnapping, and felonies associated with them and their power over the people with their drugs. if we legalize every drugs, overall these would go down because the drug cartels lose their power and money. Drug use would actually decline, as been proven in portugal. http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1893946,00.html another thing is, why would we want to spend our tax money to keep people i jail for using drugs. we use somewhere around 10 times the amount of money on our jails than our schools. and guess what the most common reason someone goes to jail. drug related problems. imagine what we would keep from that alone, plus we gain money from selling and taxing drugs. tell me i'm wrong. another reason the "its bad for you" excuse doesn't work is because our government or whatever sends people into war and death. hypocritical for the government? another reason the "its bad for you" excuse doesn't work is because our government or whatever sends people into war and death. hypocritical for the government? (read the fourth answer, this disproves it ) when your a kid you do the things you think are OK? no when your a kid your attracted to the whole hype on the things that your parents don't want you to do. you can't tell me that's wrong. "Drugs are illegal for a reason, one is that yes they are bad for you, but they are bad for society, how many other people would take drugs if they were lega, and how would this impact on the NHS, alcohol and tobacco misuse already costs the NHS millions and they are legal." is it me, or did you say drugs are illegal for a reason then gave me two bad reasons? When every drugs were legalized in portugal the drug use went DOWN, and the amount trying to quit (via rehab) went up. ACTUALLY READ MY LINK BEFORE YOU SAY SOMETHING untrue!

Resolved Question: Why are North Africans and Middle Easterners classified as White in the USA census?

In my opinion the only people that are White are the original peoples of Europe(Spain,Portugal,France,Italy,Britain,Germany etc...)and those of European ancestry throughout the world who are not racially mixed.North Africans and Middle Easterners are Black not White, simply because many of them pocess White blood, due to race mixing with Europeans, does not make them White,Much the same way that many if not most African-Americans pocess some White in them, yet they are still racially classified as Black, regardless of their physical appearance or how light their skin is.Race classification should be fair to every,North Africans and Middle Easterners should be classified as Black,if the one drop rule applies to African-Americans,it should also apply to the North Africans and the Middle Easterners.

Resolved Question: Group holiday - where should we go?

We want culture, sun, beaches and scenery, and we don't want to have to travel around to receive it. We've more or less crossed Italy off the list because there's too much to do and we won't have time to simply relax... We want to like each others company, and we every sort of decided against it. Here are the places that we have expressed interest in... Barcelona or southern Spain Egypt Portugal Cypress Morocco 1. If you have been to any of these, please describe your experience and how you liked it. 2. Which is best for culture? 3. Which is best for scenery? 4. Which is best for a hot climate? 5. Which do you think we, a group of about 6 girls (we'll be 18), should go to as a celebration of the end of A Level exams and why? Thank you!

Resolved Question: What if we just admit that girls are better at school?

Girls have always done better than boys in education, since they were first allowed access to it. The first women to force their way into universities in the tardy 1800s almost never failed, they passed their exams with aplomb. The Grammar school system has recorded higher results for girls since it started in 1945. Meta-research biological studies show that increased language abilities for girls are reliable across almost every groups (one of the few biological 'advantages' I will accept there is some evidence for). I do not believe that the education system is feminised, since much of this asymmetry existed at times when there were very few female teachers. I do not believe that coursework is the deciding factor, since this is a relatively new concept, and does not account for girls increased performances in exams. The gender gap in education exists across every ethnicities, every social and cultural groups, and almost every countries of western Europe (except Portugal and Spain, I believe). Even for the kids of upper class professionals, who receive the best grades of any socio-cultural group, and who could be expected to receive the best education and tutoring available to them - show an 8% gender gap in education results at age 16. Is it time to admit that perhaps girls are simply better at school - and to give boys extra help? Is the age-old belief in automatic male superiority causing boys to receive left behind, and if so, is it time to put it to relax, in the name of giving help where help is clearly needed? What are your thoughts? :-) Mutterhals - I don't like saying it either, but surely it's better to admit a disadvantage and receive help, than ignore it and just let them fail? :-) Please note - I did not say girls were smarter / superior. Tests would indicate that men are more likely to have a high IQ than women. This question is concerned with whether girls do better at school - not whether they are more intelligent or more capable of learning :-) Colonel Reb - it has always interested me that MRAs believe in the education gap but not the pay gap as they are extremely similar theories. I don't really believe in either as they're structural, not individualist theories, but I was interested to look what anti-fems would say :-)

Resolved Question: How many lives would be saved if the marijuana prohibition was lifted?

Marijuana costs 400 dollars a pound to produce, but sells for 2500-3000 a pound. It is such a profitable crop to sell and traffic, simply because it's illegal. If it were legalized and regulated (no being noticeably high in public, no driving while intoxicated), the profit margins would be much less, and violent drug cartels wouldn't have nearly as much money from marijuana trafficking and dealing (this absence of profit would NOT be spent on guns, transportation for trafficking other harder drugs, or otherwise furthering their illegal, violent lifestyles.) Here's a couple excerpts from an article I just read about what happened when Portugal legalized not just marijuana, but other illegal drugs such as cocaine, meth, and heroine. The paper, published by Cato in April, found that in the five years after personal possession was decriminalized, illegal drug use among teens in Portugal declined and rates of new HIV infections caused by sharing of dirty needles dropped, while the number of people seeking treatment for drug addiction more than doubled. "Judging by every metric, decriminalization in Portugal has been a resounding success," says Glenn Greenwald, an attorney, author and fluent Portuguese speaker, who conducted the research. "It has enabled the Portuguese government to manage and control the drug problem far better than virtually every other Western country does." http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1893946,00.html?imw=Y Dancing smurf - Marijuana has never been proven to cause cancer of any nice, actually recently, it has been proven to reduce tumor growth: http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSTRE5307VK20090401 It also does not guide to suicide, or paranoia, at least not in the long term. People can be paranoid and anxious while high, but this is often because of a subconscious guilt they feel when they smoke.

Resolved Question: Why is it that blacks become bi or multi racials when it involves a non black mother?

Since Portugal started the slave trade in the 1400's there has been African females impregnated by European males. Since then millions of African females were raped and gave birth to what we now call black people in the USA. Many Africans married or got pregnant by Native Americans and also gave birth to what we call blacks in the USA. After six hundred years of this, we are what we are. Why is it when white and other women began to have black babies, they became biracial? If anyone is really biracial, should it not be the white man's baby? Male carries sperm and females just fertilize. Why is it that six hundred years of mixing by force and by choice produced blacks and a few decades of sleeping with black men by white women produced biracials? Is the difference is the white lady? Blacks can be genetically traced to both Native and European blood regardless of his color. I simply want to know what is the difference? For those who say that we should simply change our title, no thank you! There is absolutely nothing special with knowing your grandmothers were raped by the trash of Europe. Besides, no culture has the history of Africa. It is a historical fact that Europeans were living in caves with no real culture when Africa was designing mail, sewer, transportation systems and the likes. Even math started there. I say this because many blacks, negros or African Americans think it started with Kunta Kante. I just want to know what is the difference? Where I am from, many of the blacks can pass for any race. This mixing took place over five centuries ago, but we married and had offsprings.

Resolved Question: International or Domestic Adoption?

I'm personally more inclined towards International adoption simply because there's less of a hassle and the chances of the child being taken away from you are also pretty low. I'm only 18, but want to adopt maybe 1 or 2 kids from China, i know it'll be tough, so i'm learning Mandarin right now to familiarize myself with China's process. I also want kids from Spain or Portugal. I thought about adopting from the U.S, but i've heard horrible stories, so i'm not taking any chances. I'm planning for my future, so i'm going to college to pursue a high-paying career. What are your thoughts and what countries would you adopt from? BTW...I want about 7 or 8 kids, but only about 1 or 2 Biological.

Resolved Question: Could the 3rd fatima secret be the due collapse of the papacy?

Now many people wonder why the Vatican does not publish the 3rd secret of fatima... Some say it is this one "After the two parts which I have already explained, at the left of Our Lady and a little over, we saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand; flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on flame; but they died out in contact with the splendour that Our Lady radiated towards him from her right hand: pointing to the earth with his right hand, the Angel cried out in a noisy voice: 'Penance, Penance, Penance!'. And we saw in an immense light that is God: ‘something similar to how people appear in a mirror when they pass in front of it' a Bishop dressed in White 'we had the impression that it was the Holy dad'. Other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious going up a steep mountain, at the top of which there was a big Cross of rough-hewn trunks as of a cork-tree with the bark; before reaching there the Holy dad passed through a big city half in ruins and half trembling with halting step, afflicted with pain and sorrow, he prayed for the souls of the corpses he met on his way; having reached the top of the mountain, on his knees at the foot of the big Cross he was killed by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows at him, and in the same way there died one after another the other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious, and various lay people of different ranks and positions. Beneath the two arms of the Cross there were two Angels each with a crystal aspersorium in his hand, in which they gathered up the blood of the Martyrs and with it sprinkled the souls that were making their way to God. " I've read one markedly different of a purportedly half-disclosed version by a German magazine Neues Europa published in 1963 what it said to be the third part of the secret of the apparition at Fatima, Portugal in 1917. ....The message explains that a "the great war will arrive. The flame and the smoke will fall from the sky and the waters from the oceans will become vapour, projecting its scum up to sky and destroying everything below. And millions and millions of people will die from one hour to another...". In 1981, in Fulda, Germany, when asked what was this secret message, the Pope Jean Paul II answered: "Due to the seriousness of the contents of the Fatima secret, my predecessors in the Throne of Peter have preferred to postpone the publication. Furthermore, it may be enough to the christian people to know that, if there is a message saying that the oceans will flood whole parts of the globe, and millions of people will die, from a minute to another, it is not really the case to will the publication of this secret message." However could it simply be that just like St.Malachi who prohecied thus about his last pope ""In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Petrus Romanus, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations; after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End." So is the Vatican afraid to admit that it will lose its power on the world?

Resolved Question: Am I the only one who felt that Ronaldo was simply a DIRTY player when watching the Champion's League Final?

It was the same way I felt when watching Portugal vs. Netherlands in WC 2006. I really felt he was a typical scumbag from 2006 when watching the CL final. Did you?

Resolved Question: Only smart FIFA users that dislike Cristiano Ronaldo answer, who's better this decade? CR7 or Ronaldinho?

1950's- Di Stefano 1960's- Pele 1970's- Beckenbauer 1980's- Maradona 1990's- Romario/Zidane/Ronaldo 2000's- Ronaldinho There is no doubt Ronaldinho is the best footballer of the 2000's. Only Zidane, Thierry Henry, and Ronaldo arrive close last decade. Ronaldinho has 10x more skill than Cristiano Ronaldo, and 10x better character. Ronaldinho could flip-flap, back pass, no look pass, back heel pass, rabona, hocus pocus, chop backwards, juggle, out run, double step over and kill his opponent, bridge, nutmeg bridge while standing backwards, scoop turn, bicycle kick it, volley, curl free kick etc. Cristiano Ronaldo, every I look is 6 stepovers and nowhere, chop, trick pass, juggle, dumb corner tricks, and nothing else, oh wait, a dumb free kick that exposes his crotch. Ronaldinho...a maestro, a winger, a striker, a sambafoot, he was a Brazilian sambafoot combined with a European maestro. Imagine Pele and Zidane...combined, that was Ronaldinho. Cristiano Ronaldo is a wannabee of Luis Figo or Garrincha that plays by himself and hardly uses his teammates. He's so desperate, it's unhappy. Ronaldinho has an amazing character, he's fun, when he plays it's for fun, his personality is every-friendly. CRonaldo, arrogant, kicks people, pushes people, always looking for a battle, he even says he wants to be the best in history...lol he will never compare to Pele, Zidane, Ronaldo, Maradona, Cruyff, or Ronaldinho. Ronaldinho has 10 individual international awards (not including XI nominations) and CRonaldo has 9. Ronaldinho had a weak squad but made the best of it and won La Liga in 2004-05, and won Champions League and La Liga in 2005-06. Ronaldinho won the FIFA U-17 World Cup, Copa America, FIFA World Cup, and the Confederations Cup with Brazil, and he was extremely important in every of his competitions. CRonaldo has won NOTHING for Portugal, even Euro 2004, Portugal lost to Greece!!! There is no question Ronaldinho is the best of last decade. Even at youtube, Ronaldinho schools Cristiano Ronaldo. Don't receive me wrong, CRonaldo has alot more to prove but for the 2000's, Ronaldinho is simply on top, no one else compares, not even Zidane or Ronaldo. You don't look Ronaldinho headbutting Italians, hanging with cross-dressers or kicking a car door glass on a 17 year-old girl. Ronaldinho truly exemplifies the best of 2000's, needless to say. @Laura: Character is EVERYTHING in football. If you have great skills but a bad rep lie CRonaldo, I have less respect for the footballer. Yeah he deserves credit but he shouldn't expect from other footballers that are defending him. If he doesn't receive something his way, he whines and complains and makes excuses, he can't take it, he's a brat. You never saw Ronaldinho complain when Barcelona lost, infact, Barcelona lost more with Ronaldinho than Man U did with CRonaldo. What do you think footballers are, robots with foot skill and they every have the same character traits. lol, some footballers are classy (Pirlo, Xavi, Iniesta), some are humble (Pedro, Messi), some just have fun (Ronaldinho), some are brats (Gerrard, CRonaldo, Robinho), some are just weird (Zidane, why did he headbutt Materazzi, that's where I lost my respect to him, no matter what skill he had). Character is where you draw the line between legendary footballers like Ronaldinho and temporary ones like CRonaldo. @La Pulga: Are you kidding me? Barcelona's squad wasn't the strongest even in La Liga, Real's squad was better but Ronaldinho outshined the first quote is true. I have watched Garrincha, Cristiano Ronaldo can't even touch his boots. Why are you saying every this stuff Figo and Garrincha did? That's just proving my point. Yes, basically, but did Ronaldinho have as much as success as both of them, no? Zidane, not that special, I understand why people even put Ronaldo Lima over Zidane.

Resolved Question: Martial Artists, do you feel that........?

It is difficult to both compete and strive to win championships + at the same time like yourself because of this sport's nature? Because thing is, this is an individual sport; every lies on you, if you lose a match then it is for no reason other than because "You're not good enough at this thing". Whereas in a team sport, as wrong as it may seem, losing is "passable" because it doesn't guide to the ultimate conclusion that you're not good. I like that about team sports; how you can't be labeled just because of a match you didn't win. In individual sports (like boxing), defeat is MUCH harder than team sports because you're the only one to blame and it leads to the conclusion that you're simply not on par with your opponent. That takes away from the fun and it's something I wish I don't have to deal with. Please note that this question isn't about accepting defeat/etc... , it's about what defeat means for a boxer/karate-ka/etc... compared to what it means for a member of a sport team. I envy those who practice team sports for the fact that they can like themselves more while still striving to win. Take for example two prominent athletes: -Fedor Emelianenko -Christiano Ronaldo Christiano Ronaldo, a VERY respected soccer player and considered among the best, can lose a match like in Euro 08's Portugal VS Germany where he and his team lost and were out of the competition, but afterwards people didn't go like: "Oh well guess we were wrong, looks like hes bad at football after every". Fedor Emelianenko, considered the best Heavyweight MMA fighter, with no losses, would be looked down upon should they put him up against someone and he ends up being submitted/KO'd/etc.. and whenever someone would bring up how amazing of a fighter he is, someone else will jump up and go "Wrong, he lost to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" The line is much thinner when it comes to individual sports. I realize that defeat is part of the process, but in martial arts you're either always winning or you're bad at your sport.

Resolved Question: Life is making it difficult for me to be happy at the moment.?

You look, my life has been tough, I was molested from the age of 7-13. I'm 15 now. I moved countries when I was 10, I was bullied and had no friends until about 6 months ago. I developed Social Anxiety Disorder at the age of 13, along with depression. I moved schools when I was 13 years old and began what I like to call my 'healing' stage, I now consider myself 'healed'. I recently made my first pal in years, and this provided me with the strength to find happiness within myself. I was glad and content, I had finally arrive to terms with everything in my past, finally settled down here in Portugal and actually began to like it.. actually, I sent an e-mail to my pal just 4 days ago talking about how glad I was here and how glad I was with my life, and a day later, my parents told me that our family has run into huge financial troubles (which I already knew), that my dad needs to receive a job, but because of the terrible economy in Ireland and the UK, he may need to look to places like Singapore for a job, meaning we would every have to move with him. I have lost faith in life. That's as simply as I can put it. Things started getting better and I thought 'Yeah, every those years of suffering don't matter, because there's such thing as a good, glad life and I have learnt so much.' But that good, glad life didn't last as I thought it would, it hardly lasted a few months. I feel as though my life has been a continuous cycle of bad events.. once one bad event passes, another one arises. Once I become glad with my current situation, life throws a little hurdle in front of me at the last second to trip over. I don't feel sorry for myself or anything, and I don't feel bad, but I just feel like 'Well, every those beliefs that kept me going have just been shattered.' and so I don't feel like doing anything at every. I had an active summer planned, but now I don't feel like doing anything. I haven't left the home in a few days. I don't care about school or anything that was important to me before. I don't want this summer to be a repeat of last summer, I really don't =( Last summer I was suicidal, I stopped eating, I didn't snooze for days at a time and didn't leave the home I was so depressed, I don't want that to happen again.. so what can I do to find motivation? It's as though every ounce of motivation I had just got up and flew out the window. Thank you.

Resolved Question: Never write off the Germans....?

1 victory or defeat in a group game doesn't signify much. I still believe the Germans have enough in them to look off Portugal, & set up a revenge clash with Croatia in the semis. The Champions will arrive from that contest, unless miraculously, Holland makes the mistake of defeating Romania, allowing either France or Italy to advance. If either of the World Cup finalists advance, my money would be on them, simply put, I cannot look the Dutch or Spain winning this tournament. The Dutch whilst displaying solid attacking verve, still allows the opposition too much room at the back, the test will arrive, when they go a goal behind. Spain has again showed it's indecisiveness against Sweden, any similar mistake against the Germans or Croats, will spell disaster. Portugal? Well, it's really difficult to win a tournament relying totally on one's midfield, they simply do not have a striker capable of scoring against a mean defense. And Scolari has already bought insurance with a Chelsea contract.

Resolved Question: Is INDEPENDENT completion of homework assignments out of vogue, or am I just antiquated? ?

Something has really caught my attention since becoming a member of Yahoo Answers and I am somewhat troubled by what I am seeing. As some of you may know, the USA is close the bottom of academic ratings among progressive countries. WORLD EDUCATION RANKINGS UNICEF rankings of educational systems in the world's richest countries, indicating the percentage of 14 and 15 year olds scoring below a minimum level in literacy, math and science. 1. South Korea 1.4 percent 2. Japan 2.2 3. Finland 4.4 4. Canada 5 5. Australia 6.2 6. Austria 8.2 7. Britain 9.4 8. Ireland 10.2 9. Sweden 10.8 10. Czech Republic 12.2 - (tie) New Zealand 12.2 12. France 12.6 13. Switzerland 13 14. Belgium 14 - (tie) Iceland 14 16. Hungary 14.2 - (tie) Norway 14.2 18. United States 16.2 19. Germany 17 - (tie) Denmark 17 21. Spain 18.6 22. Italy 20.2 23. Greece 23.2 24. Portugal 23 Although these rankings may have changed a bit over the past few years, the USA continues to lag behind sorrowfully in it's educational standing with dropout rates on the rise. My concern then is in regard to the plethora of questions posed on this forum by both high school and college students who obviously have NOT completed homework assignments: reading books, math, research papers, interviews, etc. Although during my 13 years of higher education, I graduated close or at the top of my class, I never figured out how to inculcate the necessary material while foregoing the homework. Realizing that I am old (40-50ish), am I just simply outdated in my thought and are internet forums and so on todays standard for homework completion? There is no way to deny some of the advantages of group homework completion; however, my concerns remain. In my day, asking someone else for the answers was simply called cheating, if caught there were serious consequences. Today, it seems to be the norm!

Resolved Question: Why do people think National Health Care won't work?

It works for the United Kingdom (since 1947), Germany, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Spain, Greece, Holland, Beligium, Leuxembourg, and Portugal. Is the assumption that America is simply dumber and more incompetent than those countries? Correraf Those countries every still have NHC. Don't know where you receive your shakey information. Willy. European NHC costs 11% of Gross Domestice Product. American Care costs 15% of gross domestic Product. Case closed, lights out. Misty-China has a billion people. Guess what, they have NHC. Oops! So much for that! We have socialist roads, bridges, streets, schools, libraries, parks, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Police, flame, Ambulance, but if the Insurance Companies can't rob us, suddenly it's bad.

Resolved Question: My shyness is killing me..............?

Hey there. I am 13 years old and I am from Portugal. I am in the eighth grade and got 1 best pal in my class. I have this girl in my class that she is Goth/Gothic and wears black and her make-up is black. We have a lot in common. We are very close and also best friends, I met her like 2 weeks ago and I already give her 2 kisses in the cheek, I'm sorry, I don't know how to translate it, friendly kiss. And I hug her when we hear to music and such, she likes it. Oh, she is 15 years old. But, she complains about something about me. When we are alone, I receive really shy and sometimes don't hug her and I simply don't talk to her, we just go to the school's gate and I don't talk with her, and I don't know why (maybe shyness). I really like this girl, she is really nice but how do I solve this problem, the shyness? I also don't know what to talk with her. What should I talk with her? Thanks. But when it comes to talk, I can't talk, I don't know why, and she is a renascentist girl, she wants me to talk first... I don't know what to do. Also, this is my first time with a girl. But, I don't know what to say to her, I can now talk to her about simple things, she tells me it's shyness but I simply don't know what to talk with her. I don't think it's the shyness anymore, but the question is, what should I talk with her, I don't understand.

Resolved Question: Long, Boring...Click if you are up to reading..?

Please don't answer unless you read... I know how long it is.. About two years ago I met a girl at my school - and I instantly crushed on her. She was nice, pretty, and she had a tiny amount of friends. She was also being chased by three guys - Including me. So after being her pal for four months, I took her to formal, as friends. She liked someone else at the time in that way. I told her I understood, and we stayed friends. We talked - but soon I started to realize that my efforts were worthless, and I was spending to much time with her, and I could look my pal nice of disappointed I wasn't paying as much attention to him. So I stopped hanging out in a group (my best pal did hang out with us, but he never seemed to interested) and he confessed he's glad I stopped hanging out with her because he thought it was in my best interest. I told him I agreed, and I'd try not to do something like that again. close the end of the first year (during school), I became closer to this girl again (I rode her bus at the time). I told her I wanted to hang out this summer, she agreed and wanted to as well. Then suddenly my family, who was at the time in Portugal, invited me to go along for two weeks. Of course I agreed - and off I was to Portugal. Before I left, I told her I had something I wanted to tell her when I got back. I was going to tell her I liked her. As it happens - I stayed in Portugal to study abroad, for eight months. I talked to her over the summer through msn, and I told her I liked her. She said she knew when I had told her I had something to tell her, and she said she had wanted to hang out so bad that summer. We talked once every two weeks, but nothing serious. Then I came back to America. When I went to surprise visit them at school - She gave me a jump hug, and I hung out with my best pal and her. I enrolled in school again, and I hung out with my best pal, deciding that I didn't want to make the same mistake twice. She came looking for me sometimes at lunch - and ended up taking me to a school dance (her invitation). We had some good slow dances, and she freaked danced a lot. She also flirted heavily - but apparently she had this "boyfriend in Idaho". I learned later it was a cover - a way for her to claim she wasn't single. So after that night - because I felt a bit stabbed that she would flirt with me and then tell me we shouldn't slow dance, I said fine. I simply stopped making ANY effort to talk to her. If she spoke to me I'd say hi, but that was the extent of it. Then I got a little closer - and I'd hang out with her in the mornings at school before school began, one day she even held my hand. Then I felt like she was playing with me, and stayed away. I just had that feeling. About two months ago, before school was over, my best pal told me, "Nico - I've seen Molly walking arm in arm with this guy every over campus..." he was sure they were together. And he was right, I saw them kiss about a week before school ended. That was that. Two days before school ended I rode her bus again - and when I asked her what was on her mind - she said she felt she made a mistake by asking her boyfriend out. I didn't give in to saying I had feelings for her. Today, I saw my messenger was on, and I saw she was on, so I IM'ed her. She told me after a few minutes about how she had dumped her boyfriend, and we talked. I told her about how things were running pretty good for me - how girls in summer school were flirting and every. Then she asked me to call her in fifteen minutes after she ate. I'm not superman when it comes to phone conversations - but arrive to think of it, I'm not bad either. We talked about life, and how she just wasn't compatible with her ex, and she had to dump him because he was cheating on her. She told me something I didn't know. She lost her best pal, and almost every her other friends. She hasn't even hung out with anyone this summer. I told her neither had I, because my pal is in Basic Training. She invited me to hang out next week Tuesday, I said sure. I pushed things farther (this is about 45 minutes into the conversation, longest I'd had with her was about 5 minutes in the past) and I asked her to the movies. She said yes with enthusiasm, and told me I would have to be ok with her cuddling. I told her of course. Now comes the real question...I thought her voice today was the one I'd heard back on the bus, when she sounded like she liked me, and I feel as if she's liked me for a long time now. She had actually messaged me on Myspace a few weeks ago, but I don't check my Myspace anymore, since I've no close friends other than two or three - none who are in town or close the internet. Now my question - Does she like me, and does she want a relationship with me? She's been a close pal since Portugal - I just never touched up on it. Or does she want to be friends with benefits, or what is she looking for? I'm prepared to just be the pal - but I won't deny the fact that I still have those kinds of feelings for her.

Anybody heard about the truckers strike in Portugal, Spain and France? In Portugal a trucker was killed by another who wanted to skip the strike. He simply drove over the man who tried to cease his truck. Gas is lacking at many gas stations and so is some food at supermarkets. People are scared and trying to buy as many food as they can storage at home. A possible civil war is being talked about in Portugal. What do you think of this every? Any comments?

Resolved Question: Short philosophy paper (comment): "those who don't know geometry"?

I'm a first year Philosophy student (in Coimbra, Portugal, by the way), and I'm in this classed called "Methodology (is that even a word?) of The Philosophical Work", which discusses the fields of heuristics, work methods, essence of philosophy and its role in modern world, and instructions on how to make papers for other courses in the future throughout the course. An assignment that has been pendant for ages, is to write a comment, a short one, one page, and gift it orally to the class, and then in writing to the professor. We are every to comment on a sentence, which is engraved in greek, outside of the math college here, which literally translates to "those who don't know geometry may not enter here". I have no clue what to do... I mean I am fresh out of high school and haven't had to do any papers here yet, and so.. i mean, i could write one page about this, of course I could, but then again, i just don't know what nice of text i'm intended to write in the first place i mean, anything i write no mather how cleverly written it is, the prof could just say "well this is simply just not what we were looking for". Any ideas? Any advice what so ever, anything?

Resolved Question: The real purpose of the Party in "1984"?

i need help with a essay just to give me an idea on how to construct and what lil detail to put in the essay ok the question go like this: Read the following passage from 1984.In this passage,Winston is reading a secret book by the so call Emmanuel Goldstein. After reading the following excerpt, DECIPHER THE REAL PURPOSE OF THE PARTY.Be sure to focus onb the diction, syntax and other major elements to help construct your answer. War is Peace George Orwell " The splitting up of the world into three great super-states was an event which could be and indeed was foreseen before the middle of the twentieth century. With the absorption of Europe by Russia and of the British Empire by the United States, two of the three existing powers, Eurasia and Oceania, were already effectively in being. The third, Eastasia, only emerged as a distinct unit after another decade of confused fighting. The frontiers between the three super-states are in some places arbitrary, and in others they fluctuate according to the fortunes of war, but in general they follow geographical lines. Eurasia comprises the whole of the northern part of the European and Asiatic land-mass, from Portugal to the Bering Strait. Oceania comprises the Americas, the Atlantic islands including the British Isles, Australasia, and the southern portion of Africa. Eastasia, smaller than the others and with a less definite western frontier, comprises China and the countries to the south of it, the Japanese islands and a big but fluctuating portion of Manchuria, Mongolia, and Tibet. In one combination or another, these three super-states are permanently at war, and have been so for the past twenty-five years. War, however, is no longer the desperate, annihilating struggle that it was in the early decades of the twentieth century. It is a warfare of limited aims between combatants who are unable to destroy one another, have no material cause for fighting and are not divided by any genuine ideological difference. This is not to say that either the conduct of war, or the prevailing attitude towards it, has become less bloodthirsty or more chivalrous. On the contrary, war hysteria is continuous and universal in every countries, and such acts as raping, looting, the slaughter of kids, the reduction of whole populations to slavery, and reprisals against prisoners which extend even to boiling and burying alive, are looked upon as normal, and, when they are committed by one's possess side and not by the foe, meritorious. But in a physical sense war involves very tiny numbers of people, mostly highly-trained specialists, and causes comparatively few casualties. The fighting, when there is any, takes place on the vague frontiers whose whereabouts the average man can only guess at ...The primary aim of modern warfare (in accordance with the principles of doublethink, this aim is simultaneously recognized and not recognized by the directing brains of the Inner Party) is to use up the products of the machine without raising the general standard of living...But when war becomes literally continuous, it also ceases to be dangerous... Those whose attitude towards the war is most nearly rational are the subject peoples of the disputed territories. To these people the war is simply a continuous calamity which sweeps to and fro over their bodies like a tidal wave. Which side is winning is a matter of complete indifference to them. They are aware that a change of overlordship means simply that they will be doing the same work as before for new masters who treat them in the same manner as the old ones. The slightly more favoured workers whom we call 'the proles' are only intermittently conscious of the war. When it is necessary they can be prodded into frenzies of fear and hatred, but when left to themselves they are capable of forgetting for long periods that the war is happening. Even the names of the four Ministries by which we are governed exhibit a sort of impudence in their deliberate reversal of the facts. The Ministry of Peace concerns itself with war, the Ministry of Truth with lies, the Ministry of adore with torture and the Ministry of Plenty with starvation. These contradictions are not accidental, nor do they result from ordinary hypocrisy; they are deliberate exercises in doublethink. For it is only by reconciling contradictions that power can be retained indefinitely. In no other way could the ancient cycle be broken. If human equality is to be for ever averted - if the High, as we have called them, are to keep their places permanently - then the prevailing mental condition must be controlled insanity. THe focusing on major elements is giving me trouble. Please give me some pinpointers on this essay. Please and Thank YOU!! <3

Resolved Question: what should I do about not getting along with my host family?

so im an exchange student now in portugal. to be honest i don't like my location and the people i've met aren't really the most friendly people lol but its okay. i'm having issues because i seriously don't click with my host family. i have two parents, a brother whose 35 and lives at home and a sister 2 years younger. we are opposites, which is fine, but we just don't connect. its not just a culture thing, its that we simply don't receive along. they are nice people and i am grateful to them, but still..we don't like each other at every. what should i do? i feel uncomfortable when I'm around them which is 24/7 because they never separate, yet they aren't doing anything necessarily wrong. should i switch to another family? apparently the only family member who wanted to host an exchange student was my dad. i dont think they know what AFS is about
