For those looking for unforgettable and enjoyable holidays on a budget, one would no longer need to look any further than the country of Portugal. This European nation has been a hotspot for tourists through the decades because not only does it have an extensive history and a rich culture, but the cost of travelling in the country comes at a very reasonable price.
Lisbon is the largest and the capital city of the country and in this city alone, there are loads of attractions that are simply beautiful and simply Portugal. The capital city is a fusion of the country’s rich history and modern lifestyle. Take for instance the world-famous Parque das Nacoes located in north eastern part of the city. Its design is an architectural marvel as its unique shape and outstanding lighting makes it glow like a giant colourful lantern during the night. One of its main attractions is the Oceanarium which boasts 15,000 different marine species.
Its exceptional design allows the main tank to be viewed through two floors with a 180-degree view. Although highly contemporary, the exhibition park is still able to express the country’s beautiful culture. Aside from the commemorative Vasco da Gama Tower, the park also has a Virtual Reality Pavillion that tells the tale of the age of discovery of the Portuguese. Also present is the numerous bars and restaurants that serve sumptuous Portuguese cuisine.
For a historic tour of the country, there are loads of museums and monuments to choose from in Lisbon. Located in the district of Belem is the Monument to the Discoveries, which as the name implies, showcases the country’s age of discovery. The monument takes the shape of a caravel to commemorate the country’s fundamental contribution in world exploration in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
One of the best museums in the whole of Europe is the Museu de Marinha or the Maritime Museum, also located in the capital city. Hundreds of models of various sailing ships, marine vessels, and fishing boats from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries can be found in the museum. The sights and sounds in the museum are able to give the visitors a glimpse of what life was like when the Portuguese ruled the high seas.
Above are just some of the more popular destinations in the capital city. There are loads of other attractions not only in the city, but throughout the nation as well. So for those looking to enjoy their vacation trips and holidays, the austere yet opulent sites of this country will make one realize the simplistic extravagance of this historic nation—simply Portugal.
